I began by posting the question from the title of this blog, "What is music?" Seems like an interesting question for 4th graders, but we had some great answers! They began by writing down their thoughts in a "chalk talk" thinking routine. I was impressed with some of their answers..."Musicians working together," "sounds," "instruments," etc.
Upon further investigation, however, we discovered that "sounds" was not necessarily descriptive enough. When we walked outside, we hear a lot of sounds, but is it really music? We eventually came to the conclusion, that music must be organized sounds in patterns. We also discovered that it is not necessarily instruments or melodies either. Music can be played on pretty much anything, and it doesn't necessarily need a melody. It may include just beat and rhythms. Class has already been full of rich discussions about music!
